Carriages History
Carriages is possibly the oldest property on Dalmunzie Estate and has a wealth of history. It is located next to an old path that dates back many hundreds of years. The core of the property is probably the gamekeepers house referred to in 1808 and again in the 1851 census as ‘Forkins’. By the late 1800’s it had been incorporated into a much larger building, housing staff for the emerging hunting lodge.
In 1922 the owner of Dalmunzie, Sir Archie Birkmyre built Britain’s highest railway and the house was enlarged and changed to house the Engines and Carriages from which it now takes it‘s name. Of WW1 origin they were employed to take shooting parties and visitors through the mountains to Glenlochsie Lodge. The railway remained in constant use and notable passengers included the Danish Royal family and Roosevelts. Although the track was removed in the late 1970’s the route remains extremely popular with walkers to this day.
By the end of the century the house had once more reverted to a home and just before 2000, the house had a further wing added to became the Hotel Directors home. The original rails still lie under the house and were recently discovered during a major renovation of the kitchen in 2008. Our own family have enjoyed this unique property for seven wonderful years and know it will continue to be a source of happiness for countless visitors for many years to come.
